Folkorama is a time in Winnipeg when people can embrace their cultures and show off all the things about it that they are proud of. It is also a time when you can learn about other people’s cultures – taste the food, enjoy the music, watch and participate in the dances, and completely immerse yourself in a different world. It started in 1970 as a week-long event but now it lasts for two weeks and each week has 20+ pavilions to explore.
This year Folklorama takes place from August 5– 18.
The way it works is that each pavilion focuses on a different culture. The pavilions are spread throughout the city and take place on different evenings. Each pavilion is managed by volunteers that help guests enjoy their evening. There will be food and drink and entertainment that are central to the culture of the community that is hosting the pavilion. You can visit as many pavilions as you would like but you might want to do some planning before it starts so that you do not get overwhelmed. What can you expect at the Folklorama pavilions?
Each pavilion is different so use the Travel Guide to find out what kinds of activities are going to take place. Some of the activities you can look forward to include:
With an event like Folklorama it can be like a trip around the world if you take in as many of the pavilions as possible but paying individually for each one can get pricey ($6 per pavilion with children under 12 free if accompanied by an adult). That’s why the Family Pack Passport was created. The Family Pack is $54 for 12 tickets so you can take in more entertainment.
Make your experience extra special
If you want to have a special experience, consider one of the VIP Tours. The VIP tours include luxury transportation, admission to three pavilions, an appetizer, main course, and dessert, and reserved seating. There are several VIP tours to choose from including the Wheelchair Accessible Tours, Late Night Tours, and Party Tours, with Independent Travellers Tours and Cycle Tours new this year. They are only $69.95.
If you are from out of town and need accommodations as well, consider the Canad Inns Hotel Package, which includes a VIP Tour and one night stay at one of the Canad Inns locations and a continental breakfast. At $148, this is a great deal.

Winnipeg’s Assiniboine Park features Movies under the stars!
Have you ever seen a movie or television show where couples and families gather under the stars to watch movies on a big screen? I’ve always thought that was the coolest thing ever and thought that this would be a great thing to do on a hot summer night. I mean really – how romantic is that? A blanket, a nice breeze, a cooler of snacks and drinks (don’t forget drinking in public is against the law though!) – how could it get any better than that.
Movie night outdoors is a great way to spend some time with your family, too if the right movie is playing and now, you can partake in movie night at Assiniboine Park in Winnipeg. Every Friday night from August 3 – 24 you and your family or you and a loved one can enjoy the stars and the cinema on the Lyric Lawn in Assiniboine Park.
There is an Early Feature at 7:00 PM so that you do not have to keep the little ones out too late and there is a Late Feature at 9:15 PM for those who have older children or for those who just want a more romantic environment.

August 24th
Early Feature – Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax: Young romance and adventure mingle in this story based on the Dr. Seuss children’s book.

The Fringe Festival is one of the best-loved events that takes place every year in downtown Winnipeg – and when you consider the sheer number and variety of festivals, concerts and events that occur in the heart of Winnipeg, that’s saying quite a bit!
From Wednesday July 18 to Sunday July 29, this year’s Fringe Fest will include an amazing 172 plays in 31 venues. The majority of these venues are in the Exchange District and within easy walking distance from one another.
Some of the plays and performers have been returning to the annual Fringe Festival year after year, and others are brand new. You can see a show at just about any time in the afternoon and evening throughout the festival for only $5 to $10 each. Discounts are often available for students (or, for The Anger in Ernest and Ernestine, anyone named “Ernest” will receive a discount). Genres for each play vary wildly from improve to comedy to drama to one-man shows to the just plain quirky. You are bound to find something to please everyone at the Fringe!
The Fringe Festival isn’t just for adults, either. There is a separate “Kids Fringe” with a variety of fun games and activities, including face painting, carnival games, puppet shows and, of course, theatre performances.
Enjoying Downtown Winnipeg During the Fringe Festival
Between theatre shows, spend some time at Old Market Square in Winnipeg’s Exchange District. There you can watch free outdoor performances, including concerts, acrobatic feats and entertainment for kids. Food trucks, a beer tent, and a number of display booths (at which you can purchase clothes, books and more) are also clustered around Old Market Square for you to enjoy. This is a great opportunity to meet some of the Fringe performers, as many of them will be in the area, handing out brochures for their theatre shows.
While you’re in the area, why not try a unique dining experience? From a wine lounge at Sensi to sushi at Blufish, pub fare at the King’s Head and vegan options at the Mondragon, there’s a little something in the area for everyone. Wander over to any of the wonderful restaurants, cafes and pubs in downtown Winnipeg before or after a Fringe play. Remember to take your Fringe program (only $5, available to purchase at Old Market Square) to choose which play you’ll attend next while you dine!

Spotlight on The Mosaic at 40 and 60 Shore St. Winnipeg
Near Bison Dr and Pembina Hwy, we find The Mosaic I & II, at 40 Shore St and 60 Shore St. Winnipeg, respectively.
Year Built: ca. 2009
Total Condos:
The Mosaic Condominiums were built in 2 phases. Phase I is located at 40 Shore St and features 40 units in a 6-story building, while the larger Phase II, attach via the indoor, ground level parkade, is made up of 78 units in a 7-story building. Both are concrete structures, and units vary in size from a small, 1 BR, 1 Bath unit of 725 sq feet, to the largest, 2 BR, 2 Bath units of approximately 1100 sq feet.
Condo Restrictions:
Just the usual condo-restrictions, such as “No Laundry to be hung from the balcony” etc. Owners or their tenants must abide by the usual condo bylaws.
Property Taxes
Gross Property Taxes vary from approximately $1900 for the smallest unit, to approx. $2800 for the largest. As always, owner-occupants do qualify for the Provincial Tax Assistance, just as house-owners do.
Condo Fees
Condo fees vary from $180 per month (smallest condo), to approx. $260 per month for the larger units, which includes snow removal, property maintenance and management fees and water. Owners pay for their own hydro (heat) as well as cablevision and telephone.
Laundry, Parking and A/C
All units have their own insuite laundry. MOST units have an indoor (heated) parking spot, although a few have an outdoor spot with plugin. These units feature central heating (furnace is in the ceiling of the laundry room) as well as central air conditioning.
Amenities at The Mosaic
This Condo project features a very nice fitness room, as well as a ‘Party Room”. What I consider a bonus, this condo’s management company is located right inside the building (at least it was at the time of this report in Jan 2012). This means that owners have easy access to the management company in case of problems. Another nice feature is the security in the building. Owners control entry to the building via their telephone, and yes, cell-phones can be used so long as the owners cell phone is a local number.
Location
Located right at Bison Dr and Pembina Hwy, at 40 & 60 Shore St, this condo is close to all bus-routes, the University of Manitoba, the new Stadium and major shopping centres.
Prices
During the 2 yr period of 2010-2011, condos at The Mosaic have sold for between $190,000 and $285,000, depending on size and location within the building. (MLS® stats)

Attend an Out to Lunch concert. These concert series are taking place every Wednesday until mid-August this summer. Located at the Air Canada Park (355 Portage Avenue at Carlton), the concerts go from 12 noon until 1:00 p.m. They are free to all who are interested, and the concerts feature fantastic local talent including the Salinas band, The Dead Stringers, Kyla Cederwall and others. There is an old saying that goes: “Your home is never more exciting than the first couple of weeks on the market”. So when you put your home on the market (and I mean the REAL MARKET, by LISTING IT with a REALTOR®), make sure that your home shows it’s best. Because here is a bit of reality: About 80% of your total showings are going to happen in the first 5 days…… Here is why:
When you put your house on the market, there are any number of potential buyers who have been waiting for YOUR HOME. And they will rush in to see your home in the first few days, checking it out to see if it’s worth competing for. If the buyers find fault with your home, they simply move on to the next one and MAY NEVER RETURN.
So it’s very important to have your home as ‘show-worthy’ as possible. Here are a couple of simple tips to get you started:
1) Clean Clean Clean
Counters, bathrooms, carpets, lights, windows. Kitchen cupboards, sinks and the garage. Clean everything. Don’t leave buyers with a bad impression.
2) Declutter
Kitchen counters should be empty, except for perhaps those Tea-Sugar-Flour-Coffee canisters. Less furniture is better than too much. Box up everything you don’t need. You could designate a room in the basement as the ‘junk room’ and move extra stuff into there.
3) Paint
If there are any areas where the paint is fading or flaking, paint it. Stay away from the wild colors and stick to earthy, neutral tones. That “Bright Red” kitchen wall looks funky in a magazine, but is not everyone’s cup of tea.
4) Be out of the house (or condo)
During the showing, try to be out of the house. Many buyers feel uneasy about really looking at your house, opening cupboards and looking in closets, with the home owner standing over them. Even in this hot market, the home owners should make sure that the buyers feel comfortable and at ease.
5) Remove Pets
Not everyone loves pets….in fact, some people are allergic to them. So its best to remove them, and in fact try to remove all evidence of them. If you can have them stay at relatives for a few days, thats even better.
When you buy a home, it’s the visuals that count. To sell your home faster you may want to stage your furniture and belongings to help give your home more personality. Generally, a less cluttered space is more appealing when you’re selling a home.

Home Staging Quick Tip #1: Air Quality, Pets and Odours

Even in a hot real estate market such as Winnipeg, home buyers DO have choices. In order to get the most money possible for their houses or condos, home sellers are starting to pay attention to home staging. A very popular trend in Ontario, where it is estimated that 1 in 4 homes are staged prior to going on the market. Home staging does not have to involve professional help or cost thousands of dollars, it could simply be a matter of touching up some paint, decluttering, arranging the furniture in a certain way and other simple suggestions. Remax has created a 10-part video series to help house and condo sellers stage their own homes. Lets take a look at the first video in this series:
Home Staging: Air Quality
In this short video, home sellers are encouraged to take a closer look (or sniff) at the air quality in their homes. Is yours an older home, suffering from mold or mildew issues? Do you enjoy cooking spicy foods on an regular basis? Do you smoke inside the home? All of these issues can seriously and negatively affect the sale of your home.
Pet Odors
Pets can be another issue affecting air quality. Does your doggie smell? Does your cat shed a lot of hair, which can trigger a potential buyers allergies? Suggestion: Remove the pets prior and during the showings.
