Top Five Festivals in Downtown Winnipeg

.Winnipeg Fringe Festival

Festivals are rife in downtown Winnipeg, and cover the themes of everything from writing and professional development workshops, to theatre and film, to delectable food and beverages, to historical buildings and cultural teachings, and so much more. Not only that, but the festivals in downtown Winnipeg also take place year-round! There’s always something to enjoy right around the corner.

I recommend you check out as many festivals as possible, but if you have to limit yourself to just a few, here are the top five festivals in downtown Winnipeg that you should participate in:

1)     Winnipeg Fringe Festival

Theatre-goers, rejoice! The Fringe Festival comes around once a year, lasting for a couple of weeks in the middle of the summer. Spend hot days and warm evenings visiting venues scattered all across downtown Winnipeg, enjoying free music at Old Market Square, and watching wonderful theatre shows from amateurs and professionals alike.

2)     Nuit Blanche

Nuit Blanche is a delightful combination of modern art and innovative installations mixed with partying and gallery-hopping. Try your hand at critiquing art earlier in the evening and dance the night away at this “no sleep only art” celebration of contemporary artwork.

3)     Doors Open Winnipeg

A weekend of exploration and learning about history, Doors Open Winnipeg is your opportunity to wander through all of the beautiful historical and heritage buildings you walk past every day of the year and wish you could step inside. Indulge your inner historian and find out why Heritage Winnipeg is so passionate about preserving historical buildings – and get around downtown Winnipeg the novel way via walking tours or the festival trolley!

4)     ManyFest

Between outdoor movies, a farmers’ market, wine / beer tasting, group cycling, and more, ManyFest undeniably lives up to its name. Another weekend-long festival, you’ll want to set aside entire days (and evenings!) to enjoy the festivities. Eat street food from a variety of gourmet food trucks, take the kids to the “MiniFest” Kid’s Zone, and later on in the evening, join in the “living parade of lights” on Broadway.

5)     Festival du Voyageur

There’s nothing quite as nice as spending a couple of wintery, February days eating French-Canadian food, admiring sculptures made of snow, and partaking in exhilarating cold-weather activities. Festival du Voyageur is fun for the whole family and the perfect chance to learn about our local history and French-Canadian culture and traditions.

With so many to choose from, which festival(s!) will you attend this year?

Top 10 Grocery Options for Downtown Winnipeg

Steelers

One of the biggest questions people ask when they find out that you live in downtown Winnipeg is, “where do you get your groceries?”

At first glance, it might appear that grocery options in downtown Winnipeg are few and far between. But this is not necessary the case! Find out where to get your groceries this week in downtown Winnipeg:

1)     Downtown Family Foods. Located at the corner of Broadway and Donald, this grocery store features a variety of meats, produce, dairy, snack foods, frozen and canned goods, household items and more. It is the biggest “most accessible” grocery store available to downtown residents.

2)     Giant Tiger. One of the busiest stores in the area, Giant Tiger caters to many downtown Winnipeg residents. Dried goods are some of the most popular items here, although they also feature a bakery section, meats, and pre-made items among others. They have recently started showcasing fresh produce at the check-out counter, inviting customers to make their final purchase a healthy one.

3)     The Forks Market. A little bit of a walk from residential areas, the market at the Forks can be a goldmine for the shopper looking for a large variety of items. From local honey to baked goods to fresh produce to gourmet cheeses and pastas, the Forks is worth the extra trip.

4)     Farmers’ Markets. The Manitoba Hydro, Osborne Village, and Health Sciences farmers’ markets are the best-known in downtown Winnipeg. Although only open for a few months of the year, they offer the perfect opportunity to support local farmers and try out some ingredients and products grown right here in Manitoba.

5)     MyFarmersMarket.com. Newly opened, this beautiful website lists a variety of local, organic, fair trade, healthy food options. Their online “aisles” are extensive and they advertise free same-day delivery at a time of your choosing. This is great for those cold days when you don’t want to walk to the store, or if you are too busy to take the time to do a proper grocery shop.

6)     Chinatown. If you’re looking for inexpensive herbs, spices, and ethnic ingredients that you can’t find at your average grocery store, Chinatown is your go-to! The grocery stores in this area are the place to go to find ingredients for exotic cuisine.

7)     Sacco & Vanzetti’s. Although the selection is small, the little grocery store tucked at the back of Mondragon is all about vegan and organic options and provides the essentials you need in your vegan lifestyle.

8)     Young’s Market. This ethnic food store markets itself as a “unique adventure” – and it certainly is! You’ll find ingredients you had never heard of before at Young’s Market. Be sure to set some time aside to visit the grocery store; it’s a large store with plenty to see down every aisle.

9)     VitaHealth. The Osborne Village VitaHealth location is something of a trek from downtown Winnipeg, but you won’t regret making that trek. Between the bulk items, local produce and eggs, organic oils, “green” beauty products, and sustainable meats, you can purchase nearly everything you need right here.

10)  Safeway. Safeway has locations in Osborne Village and on Sherbrook. Just in case you can’t find all that you wanted at some of the smaller grocery stores, you can travel the extra distance to find the other staples at these larger stores.

Happy eating!

Top 5 activities for #children in downtown #Winnipeg

Top 5 activities for children in downtown Winnipeg

Think that the downtown isn’t the right place for your children to grow up? Think again! Downtown Winnipeg offers a wide variety of fun and safe options for children to play, learn, and have fun.

Here are just a few of the activities available for kids in downtown Winnipeg:

1)     Getting active in parks. Central Park, bordering Ellice Avenue close to Portage Place, is one of Winnipeg’s best-kept secrets. It is a beautiful (and very large!) urban green space with play structures, a sports field, benches, a fountain, and plenty of grassy areas. During the summer months, this park is packed with families and kids kicking around soccer balls, reading under the trees, and enjoying the sun. Smaller parks can be found hidden in downtown Winnipeg’s Theatre District, and there is plenty of green space along Waterfront and Assiniboine alongside the river for the whole family to enjoy, whether it’s going for walks or having a picnic.

2)     Playing at the Manitoba Children’s Museum (and the Forks). This is an ideal place for kids to get creative and interact with fun learning tools! Children can learn about trains, food, science and more, all through a series of play structures and toys – and there’s even a summer day camp you can register them for. A hub of culture, the Forks is also perfect to expose your children to new ideas, so it’s worth taking an extra hour or two to take in the culture all around the Children’s Museum.

3)     Exploring the Manitoba Museum Science Gallery and Planetarium. Hands-on child-friendly learning equipment covering forensic science, math, ecosystems, outer space and more are the defining features here. The Planetarium is an especially great learning device, enabling children (and parents!) to learn all about the universe. Museum sleepovers, birthday parties, and day camps can also be arranged.

4)     Watching theatre at the Manitoba Theatre for Young People. It’s never too early to get your children involved with the theatre. The theatre school is open for any children and youth from ages three to 19, and is a wonderful opportunity for children to use their imaginations, build confidence, and have fun learning with other kids. There are also options to get involved with puppets, musical theatre, and film. You can also take your children to the Manitoba Theatre for Young People stage performances, which include both fun adaptations of traditional fairytales and teachable moments in modern stories.

5)     Learning at the Millennium Library. The Millennium Library has a Children’s Services section, in which they have made available a variety of books, from nonfiction to picture books, for children of all ages. There is also a multilingual section, books in Braille, graphic novels and magazines, a computer, and DVDs. The library offers widespread programming for children and youth, from book clubs to video production to writing workshops and everything in between!

Downtown Winnipeg: not just for grow-ups anymore. What will you do with your kids this weekend?

Top 10 places to shop in downtown Winnipeg

Top 10 places to shop in downtown Winnipeg

.Market 1

Downtown Winnipeg is a hotspot for summertime festivals and the area of the city that countless Winnipeggers come to work every day, but did you know that it is also ideal for shopping? Whether books, clothes, jewelry, toys, or even bikes are your weakness, you’re bound to find it in downtown Winnipeg. Here are a few of the best places to shop:

1)     Tara Davis. Described on their website as being “a combination studio, boutique, gallery, and whimsical treasure hunt,” Tara Davis features jewelry, hats, baby shoes, cards, candles, and various accessories and items to add extra pizazz to your outfit or to your home. Their vintage cameo earrings are sure to have you whip out your pocketbook in no time.

2)     Imagine Games & Hobbies. Let out your inner nerd! This store, located in the same building on McDermot as Tara Davis, features game tables and demo workshops, and also sells a sizable collection of favourite board games such as Settlers of Catan and Ticket to Ride.

3)     Hilary Druxman. Just a couple doors over is Hilary Druxman’s classy jewelry shop of unique and modern designs. Her handcrafted collections are gorgeous and wearable for all ages and styles. Purchasing her jewelry can be part of doing a good deed, too: Druxman works with more than 25 local organizations to donate profits of specific items that are made especially for each organization, which includes Winnipeg Harvest, the University of Winnipeg, and the Misericordia Health Centre Foundation.

4)     Paper Doll Clothing. The Exchange District’s McDermot Avenue might have some of the best stores in the city: Paper Doll Clothing is also located along this street. This women’s fashion boutique features affordable items for the workplace and a night on the town.

5)     Toad Hall Toys. If you are looking for a fun gift for a friend of any age, Toad Hall is the place to be! Books, games, magic tricks, cuddly toys, and more are available here. Be sure that you set aside a good hour for exploring Toad Hall – it’s difficult not to get caught up in this charming toy store.

6)     The Malls. City Place on Hargrave, Portage Place, and the underground Winnipeg Square, are all excellent malls to visit if you are looking for a comprehensive grouping of the stores you know – or if you just need access to a really great drug store.

7)     Into the Music. New and used, CDs and vinyl, this music store has it all. The selection is carefully organized and you can make use of any of their four listening centres before you purchase.

8)     Mondragon Bookstore. The books at Mondragon range from veganism to activism to feminism to economics to social change and more. You can also check out their grocery store while you’re there and pick up any of their whole food and vegan options.

9)     Red River Books. Peruse used books for $5 or $10 a piece – but be prepared to stay a while. You might have to go hunting to find the book you want under the teetering stacks, however when you find the book you’re looking for, it will be well worth it!

10)  Natural CycleWorks. If you have a bicycle question or need to get a tune-up, Natural CycleWorks is hands down the best store in the city to visit. Enthusiastic and passionate staff will tell you their expert opinion and listen to what you want and need. And better still, you can get a custom bike built to your specifications starting at just $800.

Happy shopping!

TelPay Building in downtown Winnipeg: Featured Historical Building

TelPay Building in downtown Winnipeg: Featured Historical Building

TelPay Building: Featured Historical Building in Downtown Winnipeg
Telpay3 2013-03-07

Characterized by its dazzling dusty rose sandstone facade, the TelPay building at 298 Garry Street has an attractive gleam to it and is arguably one of the best-preserved historical buildings in Winnipeg both indoors and out, while still being in use for everyday business transactions.

From the street view, the TelPay building is a lovely sight to behold. Its vivid colour contrasted with the handsome balcony, striking rounded corner, and fine architectural details lift the viewer’s eyes upward. And the aesthetic appeal of the building just keeps getting better as you move indoors.

Walking in through the entranceway itself gives you a taste of what you will see in the rest of the building, with a lovely domed ceiling being one of the first details that might catch your eye. It portrays the classic rusty pinks and clean whites with minute ornamental carvings that are used to decorate the entire building.

Featuring marble walls and pillars, high ceilings, artistic wreath details, and a mosaic patterned floor, the inside of the TelPay building is something to marvel at. The banking hall is an impressive room with an air of reassurance and plenty of stunning marble.

There is a wonderful feeling of grandeur as you walk throughout the building, admiring the frosted glass, rich mahogany woodwork, and pristine white Corinthian columns. The frosted glass in the office walls in particular is a clever feature to bring even more natural light in through the many big windows, while still maintaining the privacy of personal office space.

Even the staircase maintains a certain majesty, with an intricately carved bannister and dark, dignified panelling. The original vault is still in place for visitors to take a peek at and is a draw for many touring the building.

Both the concrete vault and the cage elevator from this 1909-building are still in use today. The three-story building was originally erected for offices of the Canada Permanent Trust Company, and much of the architectural design and details (both in terms of aesthetic appeal and fireproof construction) were included in the building of it to ensure a public image of a secure, trusting organization. The structure depicts this beautifully.

Be sure to visit the TelPay building during the next Doors Open Winnipeg event – you will be able to get a tour of the building and learn more about the history and see the architectural work for yourself!

Portage and Main sees neo-classical architecture at its best

The Bank of Montreal in downtown Winnipeg is one of the most compelling heritage buildings in the city. Located at 335 Main Street, the heart of Portage and Main, this iconic building was erected in 1913. Featuring gold leaf in the ceiling, Corinthian columns, and vast amounts of marble, the Bank of Montreal is a tribute to fine neo-classical architecture.

One of the beautiful features of a building such as this is that every detail has had a great amount of thought put into it. When admiring the outside of the building, you will want to look up, far above eye level, to admire the intricate curls and ornaments at the top of the columns. There are many vantage points from various sides of the Portage and Main intersection for pedestrians, and to fully appreciate the architecture you may want to view it from several sides before entering the building. Inside the Bank of Montreal, no matter which way you the look – the walls, the ceiling, the floor – there is something to be admired.

Summertime visitors can enjoy additional decorations of large potted plants.

It’s hard not to appreciate an incredible building like 335 Main Street’s Bank of Montreal. The building materials and architectural design have ensured its long-lasting sustainability, reminiscent of many European structures. Over the years some restoration has been completed in various aspects to preserve the building in its original form, with the bank spending $2,400,000 to see it happen. The Bank of Montreal is one of many stunning historical buildings situated in downtown Winnipeg.

At 335 Main Street, the Bank of Montreal offers free tours for history buffs and banking options for the business-minded

An excellent time to visit 335 Main Street is during Heritage Winnipeg’s Doors Open Winnipeg event: a two-day annual event taking place in late spring and featuring tours of more than 75 historical buildings across the city. At Doors Open, you will receive interesting snippets of information on details about the Bank of Montreal, drawing your eye towards specific features and enabling you to wander throughout the building at your leisure. A set of stairs lead down to the bank’s intimidatingly thick-walled vaults, which you can see up close during the Doors Open event. And take a good look at that gold leaf ceiling, because it is estimated at a value of more than $1,000,000!

Keep in mind that the Bank of Montreal isn’t just an elegant landmark. It is also a fully functional banking facility, drumming up regular business for customers. But whether you are visiting 335 Main Street for business or for pleasure, you will be glad you dropped in for a look at this Winnipeg landmark. It is also conveniently located with an entrance to the underground Winnipeg Circle (an enclosed pedestrian walkway).

Downtown Winnipeg’s Bank of Montreal is a must-see, but if you just can’t wait to get to it in person, I would encourage you to check out the virtual tour of the building at https://www.virtual.heritagewinnipeg.com/vignettes/vignettes_130W.htm. Learn more about the Bank of Montreal at the Heritage Winnipeg website, www.heritagewinnipeg.com.

The heritage building itself is beautiful, and as you wait for your meal to arrive you can admire the jars of pickled items lining the huge windows.  Must-haves: Charcuterie (a selection of meats and pates), beet salad (with goat cheese and arugula), poutine (made with Bothwell cheese), cornmeal-crusted pickerel, French 75 (champagne cocktail).

The Fox and Fiddle

Taking up residence in an old bank, this pub is worth a visit just to see the marble pillars and black-and-white photographs on the walls. But it also happens to have an extensive (and delicious) menu, and it’s a popular place for locals to stop by after a busy day at the office.  Must-haves: Spinach / cheese / bacon dip, chicken and cheese quesadilla, famous wings.

Mondragon

The place to be for vegans and vegetarians, Mondragon is a bookstore, grocery store, and coffeehouse all rolled into one. It also frequently hosts a variety of events, from book launches to music shows and more.  Must-haves: Hummus platter, BLT (made with tofu), roti.

Cake-ology

Arguably serving the best cupcakes in the city, Cake-ology is a tiny bakery where you can order to-go. This bakery uses local ingredients and makes everything from scratch. Stop by Cake-ology for some dessert after having dinner at any of the nearby restaurants in the Exchange District!  Must-haves: Red velvet cupcake, any cupcake flavour-of-the-day, vanilla cakette.

Charisma of India

This is reasonably-priced, tasty Indian cuisine at its best! The atmosphere at Charisma is very comfortable and there are countless options to choose from. Be sure to check out the lunch buffet for a little sample of many dishes.  Must-haves: Palak paneer (spinach and home-made cheese cooked in cream and spices), channa masala (chickpea curry), butter chicken.

Stella’s Café and Bakery

A classic breakfast spot for many, Stella’s offers all-day breakfast as well as lunch and dinner options. Enjoy healthy meals cooked with local and sustainable ingredients at this café, and purchase a loaf of bread to take home with you when you’re finished your meal.  Must-haves: Café breakfast, house salad, vegetarian sandwich (with hummus, cream cheese and veggies).

Elements: The Restaurant

Another restaurant focusing on local, sustainable ingredients, Elements is located at the University of Winnipeg but serves the wider downtown community. This is an ideal place to go for a lunch meeting or after-work drinks and nibbles.  Must-haves: Nachos, green salad, the burger (with locally-raised beef).

Restaurants everywhere

Anywhere you go in Winnipeg, you are bound to find yourself close to a restaurant. There are restaurants of all sorts to enjoy, from tapas bars to bistros to sushi and local fare. The Exchange District, Corydon Avenue, and Osborne Village have especially delicious options. We are lucky to have restaurants opening every week in the city – there is always something new to try in the restaurant scene.

Cultural hub

Our City is a gold mine of culture, from our Winnipeg Art Gallery to all of the tiny art galleries around the city, to the Centennial Concert Hall, to the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre, to the Pantages Playhouse Theatre and countless others. There are festivals every month during the summer, the Forks is a top tourist destination, and the Human Rights Museum will be opening soon. Culture abounds in our city!

Beautiful parks

Assiniboine Park is likely our best-known park. It is a fantastic place to go to enjoy the greenery and get away from urban living for a little while. But there are also many smaller parks dotted across the city that you can discover just by walking down the street. It’s great for kids, dog-walking, and adults alike.

Developed trails

The river walk is a popular trail to wander along, and it’s no wonder: the trail is wide enough to allow for many people to walk abreast, it offers a pretty view, and it is also a nice way to get from one area of the city to another. In addition to the river walk, the city is now developing more bike paths to make it easier for cyclists to get around Winnipeg. There are also some great trails in and around Assiniboine Park to stroll along.

Historical buildings

Heritage Winnipeg helps to conserve historical buildings all around the city, preserving the beauty and architecture of these buildings. The most concentrated number of historical and heritage buildings are clustered in the downtown centre, particularly in The Exchange District, but there are many other fantastic buildings peppered all over our city, which you can check out at the annual Doors Open event.

Outdoor activities

Wellington Crescent closes down on Sundays and holidays in the summer for outdoor activities such as cycling, jogging, and walking. In the winter, the river trail opens up for skating or walking on the frozen river. There are warming huts along the way and it offers a lovely new perspective for seeing the city, as well as enabling Winnipeggers to stay active and have fun year-round.
For all of these reasons and more, Winnipeg is a good place to live – take the leap and move to Winnipeg to experience it for yourself!

Winnipeg on a wintery day

Winnipeg on a wintery day

Downtown Winnipeg: things to do on a wintery day

With the weather getting chillier, it’s tempting to stay indoors as much as possible. But you don’t necessarily need to stay at home when you have the joys of downtown Winnipeg at your fingertips! If you’re feeling restless sitting on the couch but you’re reluctant to expose yourself to the freezing temperatures, explore downtown Winnipeg to see what indoor activities the city has to offer.

Here’s how you can spend an entire day in downtown Winnipeg in the winter:

For breakfast, visit Deseo, the new restaurant at the Royal Albert Arms. Rather than focusing on traditional fare, this tastefully-decorated, glass-walled bistro features Spanish-inspired meals such as scrambled eggs with chorizo and cornbread.

After lingering over breakfast, take a wander to downtown Winnipeg’s Red River Book Shop. It boasts an impressive collection of second-hand books from which you can find some real gems. Music lovers can walk down a block from the bookstore to check out Into the Music – not only does it have a number of great records, but the store also has information about upcoming shows and you can buy tickets right there to see bands play at local venues (many of which are right there in downtown Winnipeg).

Art is a hidden delight in downtown Winnipeg. There are artists and art shows at many of the historical buildings that you walk past as you wander through the streets of the Exchange District. The Cre8ery has a wide variety of different styles of art to satisfy all tastes.

Take a lunch break at Mondragon or The Fyxx; from sandwiches to soups to curry, there are plenty of options. Many of the dishes are made with local ingredients and everything at Mondragon is vegan.

Browse Toad Hall Toys in the afternoon for some creative, fun ideas for Christmas presents. This downtown Winnipeg toy store is famous across Canada and adults will find the products supplied here to be just as entertaining as children will.

If your idea of shopping involves clothes, walk into any of the boutique outlets all within a few blocks of each other on McDermot Avenue in downtown Winnipeg. There are stylish New York designs, vintage options and clothes made by local designers to choose from.

Stop at BluFish for an excellent sushi dining experience; afterward, see a theatre performance at Manitoba Theatre Centre (either the main stage or the Warehouse theatre down the street) or at the Prairie Theatre Exchange at Portage Place. People interested more in cinema than theatre will enjoy the unique Cinematheque, which often showcases work by local filmmakers. Towne 8, IMAX and the Globe Cinema are other great movie theatres in downtown Winnipeg.

To complete your day, go for a drink at The Lo Pub, Yellow Dog Tavern or King’s Head Pub to rehash the theatre or film performance that you just saw. If you’re still feeling lively, extend your visit to downtown Winnipeg by putting on your dancing shoes and going out to one of several clubs in the area.

Head home at the end of your day knowing that you have put a cold, wintery day to good use: downtown Winnipeg is brimming with indoor culture for you to enjoy all winter long.

What to do on a Date Nite in downtown Winnipeg

What to do on a Date Nite in downtown Winnipeg

Date Night in Downtown Winnipeg

.What to do on a Date Nite in downtown Winnipeg

Downtown Winnipeg is the place to be on Date-Nite”…..with so many options, you can do something different every week.

Here are a few tried and true ideas for having fun on date night in downtown Winnipeg:

1)    Dinner and a movie. Downtown Winnipeg is a hub of restaurants and theaters. The Line Up in the Exchange District has a good deal for dinner with a movie pass at your choice of a couple movie theaters in the area. The Peasant Cookery boasts fresh food in a sit-down atmosphere.

Cinematheque is an entertaining theatre to go to for films produced and directed by local filmmakers, as well as for artsy films that you normally can’t find at a regular movie theatre. Towne 8, the Globe and IMAX are all in the area as well, giving you your pick of any of the latest releases.

2)    Drinks before the theatre. Blufish and Sensi are both right around the corner from the Manitoba Theatre Centre. The ambience in both of these restaurants will make you want to stay for “just one more drink,” so be sure to give yourself enough time before the theatre! The Concert Hall, MTC Warehouse and Prairie Theatre Exchange all offer unique shows as well which are sure to please.

3)    First Fridays. Supporting your local artists, exploring heritage buildings and admiring beautiful works of art is what you’ll get if you partake in First Fridays. On the first Friday of every month, artists from all around downtown Winnipeg display their art in several buildings in the Exchange District. Admission is free. It’s a great opportunity to wander through countless rooms in the heritage buildings and to discover talented new artists living right here in Winnipeg.

4)    A stroll along Waterfront. Walking along the river on a quiet evening is a beautiful way to pass the time. Summer is the perfect time to go with the sun staying up later into the evening. Paths meander alongside the river; you can walk from downtown Winnipeg to the Forks at any time of the year. During flood season the river walk is closed between the Forks to Osborne Village, but it can also be a lovely walk later in the year for those who wish to get in a little bit more exercise.

5)    Watching live music. You need only be in the streets of downtown Winnipeg to hear bands practicing in heritage buildings, but seeing a live band is even better. Grab a bite at Deseo Bistro before catching a show at the Albert (in the same building); the King’s Head and the Lo Pub are equally enjoyable for music that you can dance to or simply sit back and enjoy.

For those who want to get out there and party, there are a number of clubs in the Exchange District and the Theatre District to check out. Stop by the Fyxx or the Mondragon if you prefer a cup of coffee in the evening. When in doubt, go exploring – there’s always something new and interesting going on in downtown Winnipeg to enjoy!

Downtown living is especially exciting in Winnipeg at this time because of the new Canadian Museum for Human Rights that is currently being built, expected to launch in 2013. Although it is still in the construction phase, it is already proving to be an innovative work of architecture, situated in downtown Winnipeg at the Forks. The CMHR will be both an iconic and sustainable landmark; once completed, it will be LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver Certified Building to promote energy efficiency and support for the environment.

A $310 million project, the purpose of the CMHR is primarily to increase awareness and understanding of human rights. The museum will function as a place of learning as well as an instigator for discussion, and therefore will be ideal for children, youth and adults alike. The aim of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights is to act as a catalyst for change, inspiring visitors to take action and promote social change in defense of human rights.

Winnipeg is well-known as a cultural mecca. The city is interested in bringing people together and creating strong community. The Canadian Museum for Human Rights is yet another way for Winnipeg to assist in building an identity for Canadians everywhere. This museum will also encourage understanding of past, present and future national and global issues so as to prevent the focus from being too focused on any one exhibit. It will serve to help visitors recognize the vital importance of examining human rights issues, teaching all visitors to learn from past mistakes and to work together to find solutions for current concerns.

With 47,000 square feet of exhibit space, the Winnipeg-based museum will feature 12 permanent “zones” or galleries which will highlight Canadian issues among other historical conflicts and ongoing struggles around the world. The entire 12-storey building will span across 260,000 square feet in order to cover a variety of human rights issues.

Check out the Canadian Museum for Human Rights website

Not only will the museum be an amazing tourist attraction, estimated to draw in 250,000 visitors each year, but it will also be a place that everyone can visit to learn about human rights in Canada and around the world. The Canadian Museum for Human Rights even has a section on their website inviting anyone to share their story, which may be featured on their website so that people around the globe can partake in the educative role of the Winnipeg-based museum, even if they cannot physically visit it themselves.

Check out the CMHR website at www.humanrightsmuseum.ca to learn more about the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. For those living in Winnipeg, you can take a walk down to the Forks to see the construction of the building itself! It already has the makings of a masterpiece.

Need a great residential or commercial cleaning company in Winnipeg?

Need a great residential or commercial cleaning company in Winnipeg?

As a real estate agent in Winnipeg, I understand and appreciate the value of a good referral.  Over the past 8 years, I’ve had the great fortune to meet and work with many high-quality professionals, including lawyers, movers, mortgage providers and cleaners.

Recently my home-buying clients were looking at a high-end luxury property, and were disappointed to see that the owner had not bothered to have the home cleaned prior to the showings.  If the home owner had been my clients, I could have recommended the services of a fabulous residential cleaning service in Winnipeg, who would have made the home more presentable.   I’ve used and recommended this cleaning service many times, here is why:

Trained and bonded employees

Their staff are bonded, and receive extensive and continuing training in order to ensure maximum customer satisfaction.

Residential cleaning for all occasions in Winnipeg

They can handle any type of residential cleaning you need.  Want to clean the house or condo for a special occasion such as a wedding, anniversary or to get it ready for the Open House?  They can do that.  Need a regular, weekly, bi-weekly or monthly cleaning?  They will schedule regular home-cleaning visits, leaving you to enjoy the day.

Commercial Clean-ups

If you own or manage an office complex, warehouse or other type of business, they can handle your cleaning needs.  They can even handle your post-construction clean-ups.

Aiming to have wildly satisfied clients

They engage in customer follow-up, checking to make sure all their clients are ‘wildly satisfied’ with their service.

If you’re looking for a residential or commercial cleaning company, contact me for a referral.  You can call me direct on my cell at (204) 333-2202 or e-mail me at [email protected]
