Tips for Designing a Cohesive Home

Tips for Designing a Cohesive HomeA cohesive home is one that's perfectly balanced, with each room flowing into the next with few disruptions. This balance and flow isn't only attainable in high-end, designer homes. With a bit of effort, you can create a cohesive interior design plan for any home, whether it's one you live in or one you're looking to sell. Not sure where to start? Here are some tips for designing a cohesive home.

Color Scheme

If you're planning to create a cohesive look, the first thing you should focus on is the color scheme. A pre-determined palette will contribute to the home‘s overall consistency and connect each room together. To avoid predictability, you can vary the amount of each color that you're using in each room. If you're stuck, the 60-30-10 rule is a fantastic guideline to follow. All in all, your house shouldn't have more than four basic colors in play.

One is your primary, taking up about 60 percent of your home. The next is your secondary, taking up anywhere from 25 to 30 percent of your home. The last few colors are your tertiary colors. These shouldn't take up more the 10 percent of your design. When you're painting and accessorizing each room, make sure you're not just focusing on the larger aspects of the room, like the walls and larger pieces of furniture. To complement your walls, you'll want a matching trim, and for your furniture, matching decor.

A Defined Style

Knowing what fits in your style and what doesn't will help you narrow down your options for color, furniture, accessories, and other crucial design elements. If you start mixing traditional chairs with a mid-century coffee table, your design can start to feel awkward and mismatched. Creating some commonality between the pieces you bring into your home will help curb that. Ask yourself: Do I prefer a modern style, or something more traditional? Would I rather have rustic, distressed furniture, or pieces that look brand new? What colors do I like? What kind of materials am I drawn to? Asking yourself these simple, straightforward questions will help you determine the kind of styles you want and eliminate the ones that don't quite mix.

Consistent Materials

Another tip for designing a cohesive home is to incorporate materials consistently throughout the home. You don't have to have furniture that's all wooden, all metal, or all glass, but regularly repeating similar materials can help create a visually cohesive look. Let's say your bed is covered in velvet pillows and a soft, velvet blanket. Take that velvet and find other unique ways to include it into your design. You can hang velvet drapes in your dining room and put a velvet chair in the living room. This way, you can tie the design together from room to room while still giving each area a unique, stand-out design.
