The First Things You Should Do in Your New House

The First Things You Should Do in Your New HouseMoving into a new house can be a complicated process, but once you’ve got your place locked down, it really feels like an accomplishment. Of course, we’d like to think that everything will go smoothly as we move in, but you can never be sure of that. There are some things to consider about your new home before you fully move in and settle down. We’re going to go over some of the first things you should do in your new house so that you can enjoy the place with a calm mind.

Do a Thorough Walkthrough

You should double-check a few things before you start bringing in everything you own. Take a walk through the house, and keep these in mind as you look around:

  • Is everything the previous owner said would be present still there?
  • Did the previous owner perform all agreed-upon repairs?
  • Do all the switches and outlets work as intended?
  • Did the previous owner leave anything behind?

Plan Out Furniture and Decor Placement

Before you start lugging everything in without a plan, try to strategize where your furniture and decor will go. You took care in finding that furniture, so take some time to place it correctly. Consider where you want future art pieces to go on your walls. You’ll also want to measure certain doorways and entryways to make sure furniture can make it through. Skipping this step can lead to a lot of headaches as you continually move heavy pieces around trying to find the right setup.

Ensure Your Utilities Work

You’ve most likely already set up your utilities to work in your new place. If you haven’t, get on that task immediately if you want running water or lights that work. Once you’ve taken care of that, check to make sure everything is working properly. Do all the sinks work? Does the AC/heater work? What about the range?

Deep Cleaning

Especially nowadays, you’ll want to ensure your new place is clean before moving in. While this might be a huge hassle after moving everything from your old place, you’ll be glad you took the time to sanitize everything. Do this while the house is still empty, and it will go by much quicker than you think. It’s easily one of the most important things to do when you move in somewhere brand-new.

Make Yourself Feel Secure

A house doesn’t really feel like a home until you feel like you’re safe in it, so make sure you’re fully secure. You certainly want to change the locks on the doors if someone hasn’t done that already. A security system installation can also make you feel a lot more secure in staying there those first few nights.
