Tips to finding a great new home

Screen Shot 2015-08-03 at 11.44.15 AM When it comes to searching for a new home, it’s far too easy to fall in love with a property without thinking things through. Yes, beautiful properties are highly sought after. However, to find the perfect home, you need to take more than just the look of the property into account. Otherwise, you will be kicking yourself later on.

To find the perfect house for your needs, you need to prioritize what is important. Buying a property is most probably the most expensive purchase you will ever make, so it’s crucial that you choose wisely.

To help you find an amazing new home, here are a few tips to take note of:

Set your priorities

Before doing anything else, think about what you want and need from a home. Sit down and write out a list of everything that you need from your new property. Don’t just work on this yourself, if you have a family, get them involved as well.

Once you have come up with a list of priorities, the next step is to choose your top five must-haves. These could be things like the amount of bedrooms you want, the size of the garden that you want, and how many bathrooms the property should have.

Browse online for properties

Once you have decided on the type of property that you want, the next step is to start looking online for suitable ones. There are various property sites you can choose from, and even some apps that you can download onto your smartphone, too.

One of the best sites for property hunting in Maryland, USA for example, is the Fells Point Real Estate website; there are lots of properties to choose from on here. So if you are house hunting, make sure to check this site out.

View lots of properties

Even if there is a property that you love straight away, take your time viewing other properties. Ideally, before making an offer on a property, you should aim to view at least three or four houses. That way, before making a decision, you can get a good idea of what you can get for your money.

Once you have found a few properties, you like and have viewed them, arrange to have second viewings. Second viewings are important as you can have a good look around the property, to get an idea of whether it’s right for you. The first time you view a property, you take it in, but may not notice all the small features and fixtures.

Measure each room to ensure that your furniture fits

Yes, it might seem like jumping the gun a little bit, but there is no point investing in a property if every room has problems when it comes to your furniture. Do you really want to have to buy all new furniture?

You could just replace all your old furniture and buy new pieces, but this would cost a lot of money. So it’s always best to check that your furniture would fit, before investing in a new property.

Make sure there is plenty of storage

In your excitement of finding a perfect property, you might make the mistake of not thinking about storage. Look around the property and be critical, how much storage space is there? Yes, you could add extra storage space yourself, but it’s important there is already lots of storage space at the property.

Look out for things like built-in wardrobes and attic or basement space, as having this type of storage is crucial. If you can’t see any storage, ask your realtor to point the storage spaces out to you as you walk around.
It can be hard choosing the perfect new property. However, if you take the time to work out what you want from your new home, it will be much easier. Don’t just rush into buying a property because it’s pretty, take the time to consider whether it could work as a functional home.
