With spring finally here, many of us will want to get out of our homes as much as possible, especially given the last year. It's time to make the outside of your house just as cozy and welcoming as the inside. Not only will this make your spring and summer much more enjoyable, but it also has benefits if you decide to sell your house later on. We'll take a look at a few outdoor features that will add value to your home so you get the best of both worlds.
Decks and Patios
A deck or patio is the home of the grill and the hub for all socialization outdoors. Adding one of these is a big step that really pays off. The return on investment for decks has shown to be positive when reselling the home, so don't be afraid to get one. However, this is a feature you probably shouldn't attempt to install yourself unless you have extensive construction experience.
Water Features
Who doesn't dream of having their own pool in their backyard? Luckily, if you can afford it, pools and water features will pay for themselves when it's time to sell the home, including a little bit extra on top. Remember, there are maintenance costs involved such as chlorination, proper aeration of ponds, and other upkeep costs. If you can handle the maintenance, a pool can be a welcome addition to anyone's property.
Landscaping
You could get away with selling your house without doing any landscaping, but you're really only hurting yourself by doing so. Adding things such as trees, shrubs, hedges, flowerpots, and stone walkways are all fantastic ways to increase your home's curb appeal. Compared to other outdoor features, this method requires much less upkeep and can be done relatively quickly on your own.
Lawn Irrigation
If your lawn doesn't currently have an irrigation system, you could be spending way more time on it than you need to. Irrigation systems are a comparatively low-cost way to make your grass and landscaping features stay green and healthy. Consider the tradeoff between the work you would have to do normally and the time saved with an irrigation system and decide if it's worth the money.
Fire Pit
Another great outdoor feature that will add value to your house is the addition of a fire pit in the backyard. Fire pits are great places for your family to gather and can even make your backyard much more comfortable during the colder months. While the return on investment isn't one to one, you may decide that the enjoyment you get from this feature worth the extra cash.
